Stewart Monteith's original brewery Phoenix in Reefton

The story of The Brewer's Night Inn.

The Inn stands as a resilient relic in Reefton, dating back to 1878, built just eight years after the gold rush that shaped the town. During the gold rush era, Stewart Monteith, a young man enriched by Australian gold mining, settled in Reefton. Venturing into brewing, he acquired the Phoenix Brewery, nurturing it over the years to serve the West Coast of New Zealand and beyond.

In 1921, Stewart passed away, and his son William, then managing Phoenix, merged it with other local breweries, forming the Westland Brewing Co. Dominion Breweries later acquired it, introducing New Zealand to the renowned Monteith's name.

Today, Monteith's beers are cherished across the nation. You'll find four of these iconic brews as you open your fridge. So, raise a glass to Stewart, relax in what was once his dwelling, and ponder what he'd think of it all, 146 years later.
